Key difference between success and mediocrity

I recently resigned from a charitable trust where I was secretary. The organisation has a great mission and plenty of cash but has degenerated to a pointless waste of time where trustees simply use it as a social club.

I thought that I could fix it. Boy, was I ever wrong!

Simple tasks like changing signatories on bank accounts take more than 12 months. Meetings are talk fests where any important decision gets pushed off 6 months into the future. The trustees sit there and come up with no ideas for fixing things.

What has this got to do with dentistry? Lots!

All the successful practices that I see are active and proactive.

A problem occurs – they fix it immediately then put into place systems to prevent it happening again. An opportunity arises – they seize it immediately and then look for follow on opportunities. They look for potential problems and find ways to head them off before they happen. They look for potential opportunities and see if they can get there first.

Having regular staff meetings in your practice is not enough. You need meetings where everyone is engaged and proactive. I used to have a rule that every staff member had to bring at least one constructive idea to every meeting.

The key thing is the speed and vigour with which problems and opportunities are addressed.

With successful practices things are addressed immediately and effectively. With mediocre practices things are addressed in a half-hearted manner almost like slow motion.

Where do you stand?
