Quit rambling on

Dr Mark HassedRecently I sat through a case presentation where a dentist explained all about veneers to a patient for 40 minutes. It was so painfully long-winded and technical that it made me want to bang my head on the bench. At the end of it the patient didn’t have a clue about the treatment because their eyes had glazed over after the first 90 seconds. Many dentists wildly overestimate how interested patients are in the scientific aspects of their treatment. In my experience most patients couldn’t give two hoots about the technical issues that the dentist faces. They are, however, keenly interested in how long the treatment will take, whether it will be painful, what it will cost and what the end result will be like. If you stick to just those things and leave off the unnecessary information then your treatment consultations will be dramatically shorter and your patients will be grateful.
