You won't know if you don't ask
A dentist I met a while ago told me that they had been in a full-time job for 4 months and had not done a single unit of indirect restorative dentistry. Not one!I was shocked and asked why.The reason the dentist said at first was that none of the patients needed it. But, on closer questioning, the real reasons emerged.It was that the dentist was not offering indirect restorative dentistry. Their fear of rejection and their lack of confidence was so extreme that they did not give their patients a choice — they just went straight for a filling every time.Which leads me on to my two points.Firstly, if you have an extreme fear of rejection you need to get over it for your patients' benefits. It's unfair not to give patients options just because of your insecurities.Secondly, if you lack confidence in your abilities you need to do courses and get confidence. Those might be technical courses or they might be communication courses (how to explain treatment to patients without the risk of rejection).
