Playing to your strengths
Many dentists today are not as busy as they once were.Because of this, quite a few are expanding their practices into diverse areas — orthodontics, implants, periodontal surgery, oral surgery, sleep apnoea, sedation, TMJ, dermal fillers and botox to name a few.I have absolutely no problem with dentists expanding into any of those areas. The problem arises when they expand into many areas at the same time and they become a "Jack of all trades, master of none". For example, if you only do one botox case every six weeks you can neither be efficient nor clinically excellent. Mastery requires constant practice.A more sensible approach is to pick one or two areas of clinical expansion and become an absolute expert in those. Get known in your community as the "go to" person for that field. It is better to be seen as an expert in a few things than to be seen as a dentist who dabbles in a whole lot of things.Keep your focus. Be excellent at what you do but don't feel that you need to be all things to all people.
