Making the best of a bad deal

Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. One of my weaknesses is that I don't tolerate stress well. Too much stress and my ability to think rationally gets reduced.

Because of this I've developed a collection of strategies to keep my stress level low. You could almost say that my practice of dentistry was built around understanding my weaknesses and minimising them.

This awareness of my weaknesses and the counter-strategies I employed allowed me to have a very successful practice.

But...

I often see dentists with weaknesses that are negatively impacting their success in practice. When asked about these weaknesses they're either not aware of them or, if they are aware of them, they give a list of justifications why they need to behave like that.

Because of that their practice of dentistry is mired in mediocrity.

My suggestions (if you want to be more successful) are these:

  1. Take an honest assessment of your weaknesses.

  2. Develop strategies to minimise those weaknesses.

Just to be clear, I'm not suggesting that you change how you think. As an adult it is almost impossible to rewire your brain.

What I'm suggesting is that you put disciplined strategies in place to manage your weaknesses.
