Let’s paint a scenario. A patient is booked in because that have a toothache.
Until you examine them you don’t know what is needed. Maybe they need an extraction, maybe a filling, maybe a root filling.
When you examine them you find that they need a root filling. How long does it take for your staff to set up so that you are ready to go?
I’ve timed this in more than 10 practices now and the minimum set-up time is 2 minutes and the worst 16 minutes with an average of 10 minutes.
Wow, what a waste of a precious resource!
The dentist, the productive person in the practice is sitting twiddling his thumbs for 10 minutes while the staff get stuff out of cupboards and drawers.
Wouldn’t it be so much better if the set-up could be done in 3 seconds? Well it can be!
Simply create boxes for your common procedures and put all that you need in them ready to go. Then, setting up becomes a 3-second procedure — Get the box out of the drawer, open the box. Done!
Or, better yet, hand the local anaesthetic to the dentist and do the 3-second set-up as he administers it. That way you waste no time at all, not even 3 seconds.
